Pine Needles, 1921
Greensboro, N.C.: Senior Class, North Carolina College for Women, 1921.

Summary

This edition of Pine Needles is the 1921 yearbook for Greensboro's North Carolina College for Women, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The campus opened in 1892 as North Carolina's first state college for women, and an earlier yearbook titled The Carolinian was published by the students from 1909-1917. After listing administrators and faculty and promoting a proposed alumnae center, Pine Needles includes pictures and descriptions of each student in the senior class, a cast list from the senior play, a recapping of senior class highlights from the class historian, a class poem, and a class prophecy—a creative piece by senior Lulu Rankin detailing the futures of her classmates. The yearbook also includes pictures and hometowns of the Junior class; Freshman, Sophomore, and Special class group photos and rosters; a "hymn" book honoring gentlemen of each class's choosing; and membership lists for clubs, societies, and sports. The editors insert poems, jokes, quotations, and small play scenes throughout the volume, which also features photographs of the college grounds and buildings, as well as candid student photographs. The yearbook concludes with advertisements for businesses throughout the state. This yearbook provides over two hundred images that offer insight into the lives and activities of women students in the early 1920s.
