We the Undernamed Students of the University of North
Carolina, willing to cultivate a lasting Friendship with each other,
and to Promote useful Knowledge, have chearfully joined in a Society to be known
by the name of the Debating Society. We also solemnly
promise and pledge Ourselves to one Another, that each of us, will do our
Endeavours to support this Society in Credit and to our mutual
Advantage; by a proper Obedience to the Laws which shall be made for its
Regulation; and by a due performance of all the regular Exercises, which shall
be required from Us in a Social Capacity.
That by this Conduct being instrumental in acquiring Knowledge, we may contract a
Friendship which shall not be forgotten, when we meet in the serious business of
Life. In Witness whereof we have set our Names & Seals.
