The location is incorrectly marked on the photocard as milepost 45.6, which is near Humphreys Gap. The image was taken in March 1946. The sign reads: "The field across the Parkway, known as "Coiner's Dead'nin'" was cleared by methods commonly used in Pioneer days. Traveling afoot, laden with belongings, settlers arrived at their wilderness homesites with meager provisions. In order to sow their first crop quickly they girdled, or "deaded" the trees, planting corn to grow among the leafless dying trunks.
