About this Item
Title | Barn proposed for acquisition. Note logs and shake roof. |
Date | April 21, 1938 |
Description | Photo shows log barn with a shake roof and a man standing next to a wagon under the awning, located on the R.L. Martin tract near mile post 216.9 in section 1W (Virginia) of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by E.M.D. on April 21, 1938. |
Commentary | The Blue Ridge Parkway bought a number of structures that were on the land that was to be used for the roadway. Many of these were torn down despite being examples of the traditional construction techniques of the area. The new buildings that were built as part of the Blue Ridge Parkway were designed to echo these traditional techniques but were more formalized than the original buildings. |
