About this Item
Title | Southern Pine Bark Beetle |
Date | February 7, 1974 |
Description | Photograph shows trees in an area affected by the Southern Pine Bark Beetle near mile post 388.84 in section 2R of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Robert G. Bruce on February 7, 1974. |
Commentary | This pest is present in the Asheville area and causes massive tree decay and death. This has been a problem in maintaining the forest landscape surrounding the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not only does the beetle attack the tree internally, but before it is dead, the pine needles turn yellow and red and fungus and pitch appear on the tree bark. |
