Commentary | This picture was taken of the Blue Ridge Parkway during its construction; the Parkway is still a dirt road. The photograph was likely taken in 1940 or 1941, in the early stages of construction. The picture gives one a sense for the rolling and winding nature of the Parkway. It is interesting to note that the right-of-way has not been landscaped yet. Although the Parkway's natural landscape was beautiful in its own right, most of the Parkway was landscaped by Parkway planners during the Parkway's construction. One also gets a sense for how wide the right-of-way is along the Parkway. The 800 foot right-of-way was the largest for any road to that point. |
