About this Item

Title Serious washout on fill
Date August 16, 1940
Description Photograph shows an automobile near a severely washed-out fill slope next to the road near mile post 336.9 in section 2M of the Blue Ridge Parkway, with logs next to the road apparently acting as makeshift guardrails. Taken by Granville Liles on August 16, 1940.
Commentary With a large number of dirt roads nearby and a lack of safety measures, washouts became a part of the lives of those who traveled the early Blue Ridge Parkway.
