Commentary | View from left of construction of bridge 2 and abutments (part of the bridge which supports the arches) on the Blue Ridge Parkway, most likely 2A. Taken on August 22, 1936 by W.D. Stanton. Picture from the North Carolina State Archives. Truck being used for construction hauling can be seen in background. Based on date, this bridge is part of the initial construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Construction on the Blue Ridge Parkway began in 1935 as a part of the Civilian Conservation Corp, which was started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Civilian Conservation Corp was part of the New Deal and was implemented to give young men jobs, as well as to conserve and promote nature and land. Picture labeled "left wing abutment #1, bridge #2 complete." |
