About this Item
Title | Interior of Cone Manor House |
Date | September 1948 |
Description | Photograph shows an interior staircase at the Moses H. Cone Manor House near mile post 293 in section 2G of the Blue Ridge Parkway, taken by Abbie Rowe in September 1948. |
Commentary | Photograph taken at the Moses H. Cone Estate which the National Park Service gained control of in 1949. The estate did not fit into the image that the National Park Service was trying to depict throughout the Blue Ridge Parkway so many of its outbuildings were torn down over the years. They considered tearing down the Moses H. Cone Estate itself, but eventually they decided to convert it to a museum of early pioneer life and craft sales center. The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild was eventually put in charge of the property. |
