Portrayed at the center of this note is North Carolina's state capitol in Raleigh. This building and the rest of the city escaped destruction by northern forces in the final days of the war. In fact, Raleigh was not occupied by Union troops until April 13, 1865. This date was three days after Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox and only one day before President Lincoln's assassination. |
