W. H. Davenport (William Henry), b. 1868
The Anthology of Zion Methodism with an Appendix
Charlotte, N. C.: A. M. E. Zion Publishing House, 1925.
W. H. Davenport's The Anthology of Zion Methodism provides a brief annotated bibliography of important works in African Methodist Episcopal Zion (A. M. E. Z.) Church history, along with short excerpts from some of these works. The volume is intended as both a reference work and a celebration of the literary achievements of Church members. Short biographies of the major authors are included. Davenport compiled the anthology at the request of the current A. M. E. Z. bishops. An appendix reprints articles of interest from the contemporary press, including an interesting discussion of the roles of William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow during the Scopes trial.
