Sir:—
I am favored with a Letter from your Excellency, dated 18th Inst. The Enemy have now taken post at Williamsburg and our Army will to-morrow take a position about fifteen miles above that Place, where they will be able, I hope, to prevent their making any excursions into the Country. These circumstances, and considering how much the Militia of your State have been harrassed, I think it best not to order them out. But I would wish all the New Levies that can be collected to be sent on immediately, and I accordingly send an Order for this Purpose to General Sumner. We have nothing new from Northward, but the arrival of the Recruits for the French Troops, Conveyed by two Vessels of War, which, it is said, brought Arms and Cloathing for 6,000 Men, and a considerable quantity of Specie for the use of Congress.
Regular Army, Baron Steuben to Gov. Nash, June 30th. Rec’d July 23, 1781.
