Barnhill's "holism"

When Barnhill settled down in Madison County, he brought with him faith in organic farming, alternative medicine, and other nontraditional lifestyle choices, which he called "holism." He thinks that the sense of community in Madison County was part of this ideology, but he also exposes a less appealing aspect of rural life: an undercurrent of violence and fear.
