New Bern, 3d July, 1777.

Gentlemen:—

The bearer Major De La Port a French Gentlemen in the service of the United States of America appointed by the State of Virginia is, by permission, recruiting in this State, as he comes well recommended to me, and his assiduty and conduct here has been such as to induce me to believe him to be a Gentleman of merit and abilities I take the liberty to recommend him as such to you, not doubting he will meet your countenance and assistance in the business of recruiting. Any civilities you are pleased to show this Gentleman will be conferring an obligation on Gentlemen.
